DISCOVER KURODAKE - THE GATEWAY TO THE DAISETSUZAN

Standing at the edge of Sounkyo Gorge, Kurodake is renowned as one of Hokkaido’s most dramatic backcountry destinations. Unlike the mellow slopes found at many resorts, Kurodake offers a true big-mountain feel — steep alpine bowls, technical lines, and some of the longest descents in Central Hokkaido. Add in the convenience of the ropeway and chairlift, and you have a rare opportunity to access serious terrain without long approaches.

Why Kurodake Stands Out

Kurodake is unique because it combines high-alpine exposure with deep Hokkaido powder. From the top, you can drop into wide-open faces, explore steep gullies, or traverse ridges that lead to hidden lines. The vertical drop here is greater than at most Hokkaido ski areas, meaning you spend more time skiing and riding and less time repeating short laps. For those looking for adventure beyond the trees, Kurodake is second to none.

The Yabai Tours Experience

Guided by our team, you’ll not only experience the best lines the mountain has to offer but also do so with confidence. Kurodake’s terrain requires careful decision-making, and our guides manage avalanche safety, route selection, and navigation so you can focus on the ride. Whether you’re chasing steep powder descents or simply want to experience Hokkaido’s raw wilderness, our tours ensure a safe and rewarding day.

Benefits of Joining Our Kurodake Tour

  • Access Big-Mountain Terrain – Steep lines and long descents rarely found elsewhere in Hokkaido.

  • Lift-Assisted Adventure – Maximize vertical with the ropeway and chairlift.

  • Expert Guidance – Travel safely through challenging terrain with experienced backcountry guides. We have multiple route choices from the top, ALL the way to the bottom of the Ropeway.

  • Diverse Routes – From alpine bowls to couloirs, every run offers new challenges.

  • Immersive Wilderness – Ride deep in the Daisetsuzan National Park, surrounded by unspoiled alpine scenery.

With Yabai Tours, a day at Kurodake is more than just backcountry skiing — it’s an immersion into one of Hokkaido’s most untamed and thrilling mountain environments.

**Kurodake is an advanced full day tour, that requires a 60-90 minute steep climb to the summit from the top chairlift. You will require, hiking poles and snowshoes or skins. (If you need to rent poles, snowshoes, skins, we will provide these for an extra rental fee)

On our Kurodake tour, we ski back down to the bottom of the top chair lift, before riding the chairlift back up and making one more 60-90 minute climb to the top. It's quite a lot of effort but well worth it! Then, if you still have energy left, we will ride all the way to the bottom, under the ropeway and back to the carpark.

***Please note: Due to varying and quickly changing weather conditions, Kurodake Ropeway will not operate everyday of the winter. Operating days are generally decided by the resort staff on the day. Furthermore, at the discretion of Kurodake ropeway management, the ropeway may not be running first thing in the morning but then (if weather conditions improve), it may start operation after a few hours (or for the afternoon). Conversely, the ropeway may be open in the morning but close later in the day due to deteriorating wind and weather conditions. As a general rule, Kurodake ropeway won't open unless the windspeed is less then 14 metres per second. Due to the 2 x 1 hour hikes from the top chairlift, our Kurodake tour requires a morning start.

Our guides will monitor the situation closely in the days before your tour and notify you of possibilities. If you have booked your tour for Kurodake, and it's not possible to ride there (for the reasons mentioned above) our guides will choose another suitable location for your tour on the day OR if possible your tour will be moved to another day.

**Yabai tours cannot be held responsible for unpredictable weather conditions. Refunds will not be issued for any weather conditions beyond our control.
